Advisory Board of AFibSurgeons.org


Founded in 2019, AFibSurgeons.org is an educational resource and community of heart surgeons who united to further the AFib treatment using surgical ablation.

To help manage the roll-out of AFibSurgeons.org, several surgeons volunteered their time to develop and moderate content placed on AFibSurgeons.org. In addition, the initial Advisory Board helps shape the direction and next steps of this educational platform.

Dr. Glenn Barnhart: Prior to retiring in January of 2019, Dr. Barnhart was the Co-Executive Director of the Swedish Heart and Vascular Institute as well as Chief of Swedish Cardiac Surgery in Seattle, Washington.  Dr. Barnhart was in practice for 32 years with a concentrated interest in patients with atrial fibrillation who had concomitant heart valve, coronary artery or adult congenital heart disease.

Dr. Gan Dunnington: A board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon, specializing in minimally invasive cardiac and thoracic surgery, with special interest in treating patients with arrhythmia.  Dr. Dunnington performs radiofrequency and cryotherapy surgical ablation techniques.

Dr. Marc Gerdisch: The Chief of Cardiac Surgery at Franciscan Health in Indianapolis, Indiana, Dr. Gerdisch specializes in the concomitant treatment of atrial fibrillation. In addition, Dr. Gerdisch has trained hundreds of surgeons on the benefits and the techniques for surgical ablation.

Dr. Jonathan Philpott: A board-certified thoracic surgeon affiliated with Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He received his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School and has been treating atrial fibrillation in concomitant procedures for more than 20 years.

Dr. Gianluca Torregrossa: Dr. Gianluca Torregrossa graduated from the University of Padua in 2006. After a fellowship in advanced valve surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital, he is currently the Clinical Associate of Surgery at University of Chicago Medicine. Dr. Torregrossa has research and clinical interests specific to the minimally invasive treatment of atrial fibrillation and robotic heart surgery.
